Each year since 1972, INFORMS, the main professional society of the Management Sciences industry, has an international competition for the most innovative, high impact application of management sciences. The Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences is regarded as the most prestigious in its field. The list of 175 finalists and 34 first prize winners since the inception of the award includes a distinguished group of companies andgovernments, such as Mobil Oil Corporation, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Gas Research Institute, Delta Airlines, and Chinese State Planning among others.
In 1982, the winner of the Franz Edelman Award was presented to Kamal Golabi, Ram Kulkarni, and George Way for the "The Arizona Pavement Management System," created for the Arizona Department of Transportation. This system later became PRISM. In 1996, finalists of the Franz Edelman Award were Kamal Golabi and Richard Shepard for their work on "PONTIS: A System for Maintenance Optimization and Improvement of U.S. Bridge Networks," created for the Federal Highway Administration and California Department of Transportation.
There have been only been five companies that have won first place and been a finalist during different years in addition to Dr. Golabi's teams. These companies include General Motors, IBM, American Airlines, AT&T, and The Pillsbury Corporation. Optima is especially proud that it has received the same recognition as such well-known industry giants in the creation of its award-winning systems, given our more limited resources and smaller size.

WASHINGTON D.C., June 8, 2009 -- Optima, Inc has been selected for the 2009 Best of Emeryville Award in the Maintenance Management Consultant category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).
The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USCA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

Optima was inducted into the newly-formed Franz Edelman Academy
On April 14, 2008, Optima was inducted into the newly-formed Franz Edelman Academy by the Institute of Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS).
As cited by INFIRMS, membership of the Franz Edelman Academy represents,"many years of extraordinary contributions to society through the innovative application of analytical decision making". This exclusive honor is only bestowed upon organizations that have been named winners of the Franz Edelman Award competition, which recognizes outstanding application of management sciences to important problems. Although client organizations, the beneficiaries of the analytical work, are normally inducted in the Academy, exceptions are occasionally made for organizations that have provided the analytical work for such applications over many years. Optima is honored to be among this select group of organizations and the only analytical firm inducted in 2008.

Optima Inc. is one of only four organizations which have twice been named winners or finalists of the Edelman Award over the 37 year history of the international competition and Kamal Golabi the only person who has twice led his team to achieve this distinction.
The other organizations are AT&T, IBM, and Xerox who have been winners and finalists with different teams in different years.
Dr. Kamal Golabi, president and chief scientist of Optima, was named a Franz Edelman Laureate and recipient of the Edelman Medal on April 14, 2008.
